The ignoring of the warnings I could see people getting pissed off about, but I could understand if there might have been confusion as to if Phillips was a hero or not, even though he said he didn't feel like he was. In real life, maybe he had the something telling him that no matter how far away his ship was, it was still in danger of being taken by some determined group of pirates, which was definitely portrayed by the main antagonist. ![]() I guess it does kind of change my perspective on the movie trying to be faithful to the real life event, but I still loved it for being a movie in itself and nothing else. It's interesting how in the movie, it did seem the exact opposite where before it began, he looked concerned about what was coming and it looked like his crew didn't even know that they were in some dangerous zone due to that little meeting the night the of the day they had those drills. When I came home, I really didn't go and put myself in front of the media. "I was already a hostage by then." He later said, "The media made everything out to be me. We were always in this area." and also this "I didn't give myself up," he told Griffin during his book tour in 2010. As I told the crew, it would be a matter of when, not if. I didn't believe 1,200 miles would make you safe. "I don't believe 600 miles would make you safe. Many of the Alabama's crew members are suing the shipping company, the Danish shipping line Maersk, in part because they say Phillips deliberately sailed the ship into harm's way to shorten the trip to Mombasa, Kenya, and save money. In reality, Phillips ignored numerous warnings to stay farther off the coast of Somalia, the site of dozens of hijackings, which hit their peak in 2008 and gained international attention. So now that the movie has been out for two days, what does everyone think of this controversy that has probably been surrounding it before this CNN article and segment I saw a few days was even made? B: its a good movie and frankly, I wouldn't want to see a movie where T. I felt that, A: they didn't showcase any grandiose heroism, just pragmatic (sometimes faulty) decision making of a ship captain. Last week I was downvoted and derided for praising the movie by folks who had not seen it but heard that there may have been factual discrepancies about the heroism of Captain Phillips. ![]() Not the story, but there were parts that ran a little long, Greengrass milked some moments past their welcome. ![]() My one gripe would be that it was a little long. This was refreshing for this type of movie and kept the tension focused on the captain(s). I also appreciated that even though we are introduced to his wife and the pirates home village, the movie never deviates from the high seas (with the exception of military montages). And there were great pay offs throughout: when the kid steps on the glass, when Muse is tricked into going with the Navy. I absolutely loved the parts where they are battling off the pirates with the limited options. I felt like I could smell those guys on the lifeboat. Saw it last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.
